Books
William
Gropper authored and illustrated several books including the autobiographical
“Little Tailor”, now available in the newly published
“Tales for Little Rebels”, and the graphic novel “Alley
Oop”.
His art can also be found in the works of such writers as George
Bernard Shaw, Rex Stout, Frank Harris, Jim Tully and Burges Johnson.
Historians
continue to turn to Gropper, particularly for his take on life during
the Great Depression. His mural, The Construction of a Dam
is on the cover of William E. Leuchtenburg's "The FDR Years".
His cartoons are featured in “The Great Depression”
from the series “Examining Issues Through Political Cartoons”,
and David Margolick’s “Beyond Glory: Joe Louis vs. Max
Schmeling, and a World on the Brink”.
The
most comprehensive books about the artist are Louis Lozowick’s
“William Gropper” (1983 Art Alliance Press) and “William
Gropper: Retrospective” by August L. Freundlich (1968 The
Ward Ritchie Press).
